When Luma & Co. launched in 2024, they entered a crowded direct-to-consumer lifestyle market with exceptional product design and a founder story worth telling—but virtually zero search authority. Their domain authority was 22, organic traffic was negligible, and every commercial keyword they targeted was dominated by established brands with years of accumulated backlinks. They needed a backlink agency that understood e-commerce link building at scale, not generic SEO tactics recycled from B2B playbooks.
Client Overview
Luma & Co. is a sustainable home and lifestyle brand selling premium textiles, ceramics, and curated living accessories through their Shopify storefront and selective retail partnerships. Founded by two former interior designers, the brand positioned itself at the intersection of sustainability, craftsmanship, and accessible luxury. With a lean team of eighteen and bootstrap funding supplemented by a seed round, they could not afford to outspend competitors on paid media indefinitely.
Their primary goals were building organic visibility for product category keywords, earning editorial features in lifestyle and design publications, and creating a backlink foundation that would support long-term organic growth as they expanded their product line and entered international markets.
The Challenge
The D2C lifestyle space is link-saturated at the top and link-starved at the bottom. Established brands like West Elm, Coyuchi, and smaller but authoritative design blogs held thousands of editorial links. Luma & Co. faced several specific obstacles:
Their product pages were visually stunning but thin on indexable content—exactly the type of pages Google struggles to rank without supporting editorial context. They had no original research, no data assets, and no established media relationships. Their founder had strong design credentials but limited experience with publisher outreach.
Competitor analysis revealed that top-ranking e-commerce brands in their niche earned links through three primary channels: design publication features, sustainability-focused editorial coverage, and gift guide inclusions. Luma & Co. had none of these. Additionally, seasonal buying cycles meant link building efforts needed to align with Q4 gift guide deadlines and spring home refresh editorial calendars—missing these windows meant waiting twelve months for the next opportunity.
Our Strategy
We structured Luma & Co.’s link building program around three pillars: editorial lifestyle PR, strategic product seeding for gift guides and roundup features, and content-driven link acquisition through original design and sustainability research.
For editorial PR, we identified 120 lifestyle, design, and sustainability publications where competitor brands had earned features. We crafted story angles around Luma & Co.’s founding narrative—two designers leaving corporate careers to build a transparent supply chain brand—and paired it with high-resolution product photography and founder availability for interviews. We secured features in four major design publications within the first four months.
Gift guide and roundup outreach became a systematic quarterly campaign. We built relationships with editors at major lifestyle publications, submitted products for editorial consideration three months before publication deadlines, and followed up with personalized pitches highlighting what made each product seasonally relevant. This strategy alone generated 89 backlinks from gift guide inclusions across two holiday seasons.
Our content-driven approach produced two linkable assets. First, “The Conscious Home Report”—a survey of 800 consumers on sustainable purchasing decisions, with data on willingness to pay premiums for ethically sourced home goods. Second, a visual guide to building a capsule home collection, designed for design bloggers and Pinterest-heavy publications to reference and link.
We also implemented a strategic blogger and influencer seeding program, not fornofollow social mentions, but for genuine editorial reviews from design bloggers with established domain authority. We vetted every target for real traffic, editorial standards, and dofollow linking practices. Products were sent with no strings attached; our team followed up only with journalists and bloggers who organically chose to feature the products.
E-commerce-specific technical coordination ensured new backlinks pointed to a mix of category pages, editorial content hubs, and the homepage—avoiding over-optimization of product page anchor text while building sitewide authority. We worked with Luma & Co.’s development team to create link-worthy category landing pages with buying guides, material sourcing stories, and care instructions that gave publishers contextual pages to reference.
Results
In fourteen months, Luma & Co. built 428 high-quality backlinks from 203 unique referring domains. Domain authority grew from 22 to 51. Organic traffic increased 340%, with e-commerce conversion rate from organic sessions improving 28% as traffic quality improved. The brand achieved page-one rankings for eight primary category keywords and became the most-linked new entrant in their niche according to third-party competitive analysis.
Revenue attributed to organic search grew from 4% of total revenue to 31%, reducing their dependence on paid social and enabling profitable expansion into two new international markets. The Conscious Home Report continues to earn backlinks eighteen months after publication, demonstrating the compounding value of content-driven link acquisition.
Luma & Co.’s founders described the partnership as transformative: “We knew design and product. They knew how to get the right people talking about us.”
